As part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 5-Star Safety Ratings Program Acura models with rearview cameras are the first in the industry to meet the Advanced Technology Feature performance criteria (http://1.usa.gov/Pv0lKq). Previously called the New Car Assessment Program, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs crash and rollover testing to provide consumers with information about the safety of a vehicle. Now called the 5-Star Safety Ratings Program, consumers can easily compare which vehicle will keep them best protected with one star being the lowest ranking, and five stars being the highest.

Auto safety has evolved over the years from basic seatbelts to advanced technologies all aimed at keeping drivers safe and accident free. Today’s vehicles are the safest in history thanks to continuing innovation from manufacturers like Acura, which has contributed to a yearly decrease in crash-related fatalities and injuries nationwide. Rearview cameras greatly enhance driver visibility allowing them to see any obstructions, especially people, in the area immediately behind the vehicle.

One component of the program is NHTSA’s recommended Advanced Technology Features is a rearview backup camera which was added to encourage manufacturers to improve the rearview visibility for drivers. The 5-Star Safety Ratings Program Advanced Technology Feature also includes Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) which are also offered on many Acura models. These systems utilize a camera mounted behind the windshield of a front mount radar system to warn drivers of a potential collision if a vehicle is detected in front of them or to alert them to another vehicle moving unexpectedly out of a detected lane. Acura also offers Blind Spot Information (BSI) system to further enhance driver safety.

“All 2015 Acura models will feature rearview cameras as a standard feature” shares Duane Sanders, General Manager of Santa Barbara Auto Group “Acura is committed to safety and enhancing driver visibility to protect our customers and everyone on the road.”

Acura models that earned the Advanced Technology Feature recognition from NHTSA for their rearview camera are the Acura ILX and ILX Hybrid, MDX, TL, TSX, RDX, RLX and RLX Hybrid. The eagerly anticipated 2015 Acura TLX midsize luxury sedan will also be equipped with the same rearview camera system.
